Mariyapan Thangavelu made history in Rio Paralympics by becoming the first Indian to win gold medal in High jump. He achieved this feat by clearing 1.89 meters.
Here are the five interesting facts about Mariyan Thangavelu :
1.When he was five, a bus ran over his right leg below his knee which left him with permanent disability. He told The Hindu that ‘It doesn’t matter, my leg is stunned and it has never grown from my incident’
2.Thangavelu’s favourite sport is Volleyball. At his 14 age, he competed against able bodies in high jump event on advise of his physical educator.
3. Fortunately, he received right support and openings at young age. His coach SatyaNarayana spotted him at National Paralympics and trained him in Bangalore.
4. Thangavelu’s mother used to sell vegetables and she earns 200 rupees per day. Mariyapan also had 3 siblings and it was challenging task for her mother to grow her children. Also she took 3 lakhs loan when Thangavelu met with an accident and still it was not repaid.
5.In March 2016,Thangavelu cleared a distance of 1.78 metres in men’s high jump T42 event at the IPC grand prix in Tunisia and he confidentially told that Gold is possible in Paralympics 2016.
Now he achieved it and government of TamilNadu rewarded him Rs. 2 crores and Rs 75 lakhs from Indian Government
