​On occasion of 24th anniversary of the release of #KamalHaasan’s1992 Deepavali Blockbuster #DevarMagan aka #ThevarMagan, here are some facts about the movie.
Trivia :

▶ Thevar Magan was released on Deepavali 1992, along with Superstar #Rajnikanth starrer S.P.Muthuraman directorial Pandiyan, Vijayakanth starrer Kaviya Thalaivan, Sathyaraj starrer Thirumathi Pazhanichamy, KBhagyaraj’s Rasukutty, Prabhu starrer P.Vasu’s Senthamizh paattu, And won the box office battle, completing a Silver Jubilee run.
▶ Thevar Magan was popular Malayalam director Bharathan’s second tamil flick (After his debut with Vineeth starrer Aavarampoo).
▶ The Thevar Magan unit went to shoot at Pollachi initially without a proper script,and returned back due to confusion. Later, popular producer and script writer Kalaignanam helped Kamal by giving the plot suggestion of “One Temple,Two Locks”, which Kamal liked. Later Kamal developed the script and dialogues in 7 and half days.

▶ Besides playing the lead role, Kamal Haasan wrote Thevar Magan, produced the film along with his brother Chandra Haasan under his Raaj Kamal Films International banner,and also sang the “Inji Iduppazhagi”  number.
▶ Thevar Magan was the first Tamil film to be written with Movie Magic, a screenwriting software.
▶ Meena was supposed to play Revathi’s Panchavarnam role, and she had even acted for few days but was replaced later due to date problems.
▶ The initial choice was to cast either Vijayakumar or S. S. Rajendran as Kamal’s father. It was Kamal who approached Sivaji Ganesan,and his portions were completed within 7 days.
▶ Kamal initially wanted to name the movie as Nammavar (Which was later used for his 94 Deepavali release by K.S.Sethumadhavan).
▶ The film won five National Film Awards, including the Best Tamil Film Award (Producer Kamal Haasan) , Best Supporting Actress Award (Revathi), Best playback singer Female (S.Janaki), Best audiography (N.Pandurangan), Special Jury Award (SivajiGanesan).
▶ Thevar Magan won Kamal Haasan the best actor award and Revathi the best actress award at Filmfare.
▶ Thevar Magan  was chosen by India as its entry for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 65th Academy Awards, but was not nominated. 
▶ Kamal Haasan’s daughter ShrutiHaasan made her singing debut (“Potri Paadadi Penne”) at the age of six with Thevar Magan. 
▶ Coincidentally, Sakthivelu was Kamal Haasan’s character name in both Thevar Magan and Nayakan,and both the films were India’s official entries to the Oscars for Best Foreign Film in 1992 and 1987.
▶ It was later remade in Hindi as Virasat (1997) by Priyadarshan starring AnilKapoor, AmrishPuri, Tabu, and in Kannada as Thandege Thakka Maga (2006) by S.Mahendar, starring #Ambareesh and #Upendra.
▶ In 2016, Lyricist – Director Gangai Amaran claimed that he had wanted to make a film Athiveerapandiyan with Kamal, which was stopped by #Ilayaraja, (who had reportedly told Kamal that Amaran was not a good film maker), and that Kamal had remade his script as Thevar Magan.
